New Player Advice

I have LARPed since 1998, and along the way I’ve given advice to many new players, so I thought I’d put it all down on my website. One of the most important things to do is to buy and read the Rulebook for your game. If you get the chance, to post on the forums of your local chapter and introduce yourself so you’ll know some of the people coming into the game.

One of the oldest rules in LARPing is, Always be Kind to Newbies. Unlike table-top role-playing games, live-action games are very fast-paced and we often don’t have the time to look up rules. If you get confused, you can always ask for an explanation.

Many new players ask, what should I bring to an event? I suggest that you not bring weapons to your first game so that you can get a feel for the different weapon styles and pick the one you like best. Many players have spare weapons, and if you ask in advance will be happy to bring them. If you’re set on having your own weapons for the first game, I suggest you look at my How to Build a Weapon pages.
