Celtic Knotwork Door

This Celtic Knotwork Door was my entry for the 2005 Jeld-Wen Student Door Design Contest. My entry was one of the finalists, and while I did not win the scholarship, I was nominated for an Honorable Mention.

I chose a Celtic Knot for my design for many reasons. Some of my ancestors came from Ireland, and I have been studying the culture and artwork of my forefathers. Celtic artwork and knots appeal to me because they are simple yet beautiful patterns that turn make art for lines. Additionally, I am studying Architecture in Boston, which has a strong Irish tradition. I know this design will be well received in the greater Boston area.

When I designed the pattern and placement of the window, I took into consideration the average eye levels of men and women, and centered the window on those dimensions. The window extends one foot above and below the average eye levels, letting clients easily view their guests.

The Celtic Knot pattern repeats itself below the knob, but this lower repetition is expressed in wood rather than glass to increase the durability of the door. The knob is placed within the design, to reinforce its importance within the design.
